Bimini Islands Coronavirus Covid-19 Update – Cases Quarantine Deaths Stats to Bahamas

Bimini is a district of the Bahamas and consists of two main islands located 50 miles east of Florida and American visitors love the Bimini islands as the place is the closest from the coast of Florida and from this island, at night, one can see the glow of the Miami Beach.

Apart from being situated at a very good location the place has many other attractions as well. Bimini Islands are world famous because of the game called fishing.

Fishing tournaments serve as a major attraction to the place extending from spring to fall. Almost every weekend holds some tournament or the other.

Apart from fishing, diving and yachting are also immensely popular around the islands. What the visitors and tourists might enjoy the most, however, might be just to chill and relax on a sun-bathed beach.

Bimini islands are therefore the ideal place for anybody whether a tourist is looking for some hyper activity or for a relaxation during the weekend, whether it is for just a few days or for a longer stay.

Around the calm water of the Bimini Islands yachtsmen enjoy their time riding through on a boat or even residing there for long. North Bimini, South Bimini, Gun Cay or Cat Cay – all these docks are available to the many boaters and here they can choose to stock up on supplies.

They also get to experience the local atmosphere of the clubs and Bahamas Resorts along the shore.

Understand

Bimini is surrounded by shallow reefs near shore – but the depth then increases to 80 to 100 feet before dropping into the abyss of the Gulf Stream. To the west, the Gulf Stream current flows north through the deep water between Miami and Bimini, where the ocean is over 6,000 feet deep. The Gulf Stream brings hundreds of marine animals near to the shores of Bimini.

Bimini is only 50 miles east of Miami Beach, Florida.

Bimini has three main islands: North Bimini, East Bimini and South Bimini. These coral islands are small, only 7 miles long and only 200 yards wide at their narrowest. Perched at the west end of the Bahamas Bank, Bimini is surrounded by shallow water (only 20 to 30 feet deep) to the north, south, and east.

Regions

Bimini district of the Bahamas is a chain of three major islands: North, South and East Bimini.

  • North Bimini is an island of only 1600 residents. North Bimini is long, flat, and narrow.
  • South Bimini houses an airstrip, and offers a quiet alternative to the slow bustle of North Bimini. There is a small community of homes on South Bimini known as Port Royale. For many years, South Bimini tourists were limited to boaters because there was little accommodation other than private homes.

Cities

  • Alice Town is the main village on North Bimini.

Understand

History of Bimini

Bimini is home to several landmarks said to contain mystical properties of obscure origins. Much of the historical data about these places is speculative in nature, and experts in various fields have opined across the full spectrum of explanation. Also, during the period of Prohibition in the United States, Bimini was a favorite haven and supply point for the rum-running trade. Some claim that the term “the real McCoy” was applied to the rum provided by William S. McCoy, who used Bimini to transport whiskey to America during the Prohibition.

Another interesting fact is that Bimini was a common travel destination for Hemingway. In fact, it is said that his love of Bimini inspired him to write The Old Man and The Sea, as well as Islands in The Stream.

In the 1920s Bimini shipped tons of liquor to a “dry” America during the prohibition against strong drink.

Bimini has remained relatively unchanged over the years and is a very quiet and peaceful place to live or stay. Its population is a bit over 1,600 and Biminites are friendly and welcome you to join them for conversation.

Legends

It is rumoured that the Fountain of Youth, which was searched for by Juan Ponce de León, exists within the shallow pools of South Bimini, and that the Lost City of Atlantis is in the shallow waters off of Bimini where divers can observe the Bimini Stones. In keeping with this legend, the Bimini Stones are claimed to have been a road into Atlantis.

Weather in Bimini

Bimini is a tropical destination with pleasant temperatures around the year. The summer months are warmer with calm seas, while winters on Bimini are a bit cooler with some ocean breeze. Mid-winter temperatures on Bimini can be cool at times. There is a rainy season on Bimini with occasional rainfall and rare hurricanes from July to October.

Other destinations

Being such a small island, besides the main town of Alice Town, there aren’t many other destinations on the island.

Get in

Located only 40 miles from Florida, the closest to the United States, it is an easy topical destination for Americans and Canadians.

If you land at the airport you take a “taxi” to the ferry which take five minutes to North Bimini and costs $5 total for both. United Airlines serve Bimini, flying in to the airport on South Bimini.

Get around

North Bimini is crossed by two small paved roads which run the length of the 7-mile long island. A bicycle or golf cart is all you need to get around if you really need to go anywhere. The main road is the Kings Highway where most shops, hotels and restaurants are located. The smaller Queen’s Highway follows the east coast and is where the beaches are located.

Sightseeing in Bimini

The remains of the shipwrecked SS Sapona

Bimini’s fame comes from Hemingway and fishing. Hemingway spent a few seasons in Bimini fishing and writing ‘To Have and To Have Not’ and later based his novel ‘Islands in the Stream’ here. A small Hemingway museum and sign marking his time on the island were destroyed by fire in 2006 along with the Compleat Angler Hotel where he once stayed.

The Bimini Museum has a very interesting collection of artifacts and exhibits on the island’s history. The museum is located in Alice Town on the southern end of main road (the Kings Highway).

What to do in Bimini

Waterfront in Alice Town, North Bimini

The economic fuel of Bimini comes from deep sea fishing and the island has been known as the “Deep Sea Fishing Capital of the World.” The storied past can be seen in the many black and white photos of record catches around the island, but commercial overfishing has greatly reduced the big game. The seasons in Bimini are opposite the normal Bahamas with tourists flocking from April – July to take advantage of the calm seas for fishing and diving. Wealthy Floridians make the short trip to the island in their yachts creating a fairly lively party scene.

Since Bimini is close to Miami, many American travellers go to the island by boat to fish or to enjoy the local nightlife. Scuba diving and snorkelling are also popular activities, as there are many shipwrecks in the area, such as the wreck of the SS Sapona, which ran aground in 1926 during a hurricane.

Bars outnumber restaurants in Bimini two to one and a large liquor store occupies a choice location in the harbour. The weather is hot in the summer with afternoon thunder showers and warm and windy in the winter months. If you are not there to fish other activities include bone fishing, scuba diving, boating and relaxing. Bimini has several small beaches, but it is not a ‘beach island’

Where to eat in Bimini

Abaco Islands Bahamas Coronavirus Covid-19 Update – Cases Quarantine Deaths Stats

abaco1000x600

Hurricane Dorian struck the Abaco Islands on September 1 with maximum sustained winds of 185 mph (295 km/h), tying with the 1935 Labor Day hurricane for the highest wind speeds of an Atlantic hurricane ever recorded at landfall. Dorian went on to strike Grand Bahama at similar intensity, stalling just north of the territory with unrelenting winds for at least 24 hours. The resultant damage to these islands was catastrophic; most structures were flattened or swept to sea, and at least 70,000 people were left homeless.

The Abaco Islands are a haunt for boating and sailing for the locals as well as the tourists and visitors to the islands of the Bahamas. The Abacos are a group of islands in the Bahamas east of Grand Bahama. Great Abaco and Little Abaco are the primary islands. Disney’s privately-owned “Castaway Cay” is here.

Andros is famous as the bone fishing capital in the world. The total area is of 2,300-square-miles. It is proud of having the second-largest reef in the Northern Hemisphere.

The oldest dive resort of the planet is situated over here. The average temperature of the water here, all the year round, is about 80F.

People come here for diving or snorkeling and the crystal clear blue waters present an over flowing and abundant marine life that is extremely charming to every tourist and visitor and of course the student of nature.

The clear blue waters of the islands are full of life. Here can be seen over forty different kinds of wild orchids, rare, endemic birds, wild boar, iguanas as long as four feet. Recently a tribal group was discovered as well and they make their homes among the miles of deserted beaches, freshwater mud flats, thick brush, lush pine forests and inland waterways that make up this Atlantic oasis.

It is the same island that is supposed to have the treasure of Sir Henry Morgan buried in its earth and is also thought of as the home to the two mythical creatures called the chickcharnies and Lusca.

The locals are called the Androsians and these people are really peace loving and are skilled in artistry. They are also craftsmen. Their origin dates back to the Seminole Indians, runaway slaves from Florida and an ethnic mix of different people from Africa to South America.

The people of the island are really hospitable and they invite visitors and tourists i.e. you to come and take a look around their beautiful home. Whether you are someone who loves the very many sports or someone who loves nature – you will find it all in the same place called the Andros Islands.

Every kind of water sport that comes in mind is popular here in the Bahamas and in the Andros islands as the water temperature is always at an average of about 80F. The clarity of the water in here surprises the divers as well as marine biologists. The rich quality of the dive sites provide them with a lot of material for study.

The shallow-water coral gardens are easily accessible and this makes the snorkelers very happy.

Exuma Islands Coronavirus Covid-19 Update – Cases Quarantine Deaths Stats to Bahamas

exuma1000x600

Hurricane Dorian struck the Abaco Islands on September 1 with maximum sustained winds of 185 mph (295 km/h), tying with the 1935 Labor Day hurricane for the highest wind speeds of an Atlantic hurricane ever recorded at landfall. Mainly it is for the fishing and boating activities that one comes to the Exuma Islands as this place is world famous for both of these activities. The sailing is made amazingly beautiful with the presence of the picturesque islands that stretch for miles and more and the cays and hidden coves.

Exuma is a district of the Bahamas, consisting of over 360 islands (or cays). The largest of the cays, and the only one with any significant population, is Great Exuma, which is 37 mi (60 km) in length.

Both for recreational purposes and for yachting, people enjoy sailing in here as well as all around the Islands of the Bahamas.

Here the temperature stays around 78F all the year round. The rolling hills in the horizon and the wide sandy beaches as well as the beautiful crystal clear waters give life to some of the most amazing creatures of the world.

Several rare birds and exotic reptiles as well as many colorful fish reside in The Exuma Cays Land and Sea Park.

This is also the home for astounding species of flora. These shallow waters teem with life and this is what the snorkellers find to be very attractive and adventurous.

The divers here get to explore the huge coral reef or Exuma Sound. The Exuma Sound is full of caves, blue holes and shipwrecks.

About 3,600 people inhabit the Exuma Islands. They mainly depend on farming, fishing and tourism for their livelihood. The island is dotted with ruins of earlier settlements, outdoor markets, and quaint farming communities.

Many fruits and vegetables are exported from these islands to the various parts of the globe like fresh pineapple, tasty tomatoes, juicy guava, sweet mangoes, huge avocados and pigeon peas. The Exuma Islands have been the chosen spot for many movie locations and are quite popular in Hollywood.

More than any other island in the Bahamas these islands has been spotted twice in the James Bond movies. Whatever it is that you might be looking for – be it boating, fishing, diving, ecotourism or escapism – you are sure to find it here in The Exuma Islands.

Little Exuma — Tropic of Cancer Beach
The longest beach in the island of Exuma as well as the best one is known as Little Exuma. The water here is blue-green and is bordered by pale sand. The tropic of cancer runs right through this beach and usually you will find this beach quite deserted and therefore is a perfect spot for a loner.

Great Exuma — Beachfront Resorts
This is one of the beaches that you ought to visit when you get to the islands of the Bahamas even though it is not that popular as a beach.

Shroud Cay
This is a beach that has a large mangrove density and is to be visited by the casual tourist for experience.

Islands

Many of the islands in the Exumas are privately owned. Only inhabited islands open to the public (or at least paying guests) are listed here.

  • Great Exuma
  • Fowl Cay
  • Iguana Cay
  • Musha Cay — super-exclusive resort that hosts only one group of up to 20 guests at a time
  • Staniel Cay

Cities

There are nurse sharks and lemon sharks in the waters around the islands. They don’t usually bother humans, but it’s best to ask for local advice on where to swim — shallow water is usually fine.
