Villagers in Thailand's north east are convinced that a malevolent “Phee Mae Mai” (widow ghost) is at work after thirteen people died in one small area in the last three months.

They have decided to protect themselves by hanging red clothing outside their homes in Ban Tha Luang in Tha Luang sub-dictrict of Phimai.

Phee Mae Mai usually come for men but women have been dying too.

In the latest death a man called Buneuan, 55, collapsed by the road and later died. He had been perfectly healthy up to that point.

Since November victims aged 17 to 60 had been taken. Most of them were men.

Now the locals are hanging out things like Manchester United jerseys to deter the ghosts.

Like in other countries the team is also known as the Red Devils in Thailand.

That might help combat the local scourge..

A man has been summoned for questioning by police in Thailand’s north-eastern province of Nong Khai, as they suspect he might be the person who shot and killed three people, including a two-year boy, and injured four others during a gold shop robbery in Lop Buri province on January 9th.

National police chief, Pol Gen Chakthip Chaijinda, said today that the man, whose identity was not disclosed, matches the suspect’s profile, being of a similar height and seen carrying a red shoulder bag, similar to the one used by the robber.

The Nong Khai police called the man in for questioning and collected a DNA sample, said the police chief, adding that, if the results of the tests exclude the individual as a suspect, he will be released.

Ubol Ratana Dam at lowest level in 40 years

By THE NATION

Ubol Ratana Dam in Khon Kaen province was at 19 per cent of capacity on Friday (January 17) with 472 million cubic metres in the reservoir – its lowest level in 40 years.

Concern is rising over the impact on surrounding farmland and fish habitats.

Rice farmer and fisherman Sawang NuayKiao said the water level at the dam, which opened in 1966, has steadily dropped, as has the number of fish he can catch every day.

“I used to sell Bt200-Bt300 worth of fish a day. Now I’m only catching Bt100-Bt200 worth.”

Nor is he able to grow as much rice as he once did, he said, due to limitations in irrigation.

Community police station set up at Udon Thani Hospital to help tackle violent incidents

By THE NATION

Udon Thani Hospital has established a community police station in front of its emergency room (ER) to prevent violence in hospital areas.

Dr Narong Thadadet, director of Udon Thani Hospital, said that in the past few years there had been cases of violent quarrels and fighting in the hospital’s emergency room. “The cases were reported more frequently during festival holidays when the number of road accidents and public brawling spike,” he said. “Most of the time, patients’ relatives are clashing with the other party, leading to violence to seek revenge for the dead or injured.”

During the New Year festival last month, the hospital’s ER saw six physical assaults, he added.

To solve this problem, the hospital had reached out to Pol Maj-General Nanthachat Supphamongkol, Udon Thani Police Station commander, to discuss a possible solution. “In the past, although hospital staff call..

Thai TV reported on the case of a man in Sisaket in the north east of Thailand who won 6 million baht in the national lottery in May.

The man has squandered most of his money on a car, drugs and sex and now his own mother has reported him to the police after he trashed her house.

She hopes being in custody and perhaps doing jail time will cause him to turn over a new leaf.

Mum Kom Phokha said her son Chainarong “Ben” Phokha, 35, always did a few Ya Ba.

But after he won the lottery things took a turn for the worse.

He bought a car, spent loads of money on Ya Ba, girls at the karaoke and gambling. He had no job.

Locals started calling him “Sia Ben Khukhan” – Big shot Ben from Khukhan, the police jurisdiction where he is now being held.

She thought it best to put the remaining money in her name but she still handed out 100,000 baht every 20 days to her son.

Mekong River levels in Nong Khai continue to drop

By THE NATION

The level of the Mekong River in Nong Khai province has plummeted below the bank by 11.34 metres, according to the Hydrological Division of the province on Wednesday (January 15).

The division said the level was at 86 centimetres, the lowest level in the past one year with the possibility of a further decrease.

Also, the Thai–Lao Friendship Bridge’s piers can be seen clearly at this time. The bridge was located near the Hydrological Division.

The drop in water levels has revealed sand dunes in the middle of the river. This has affected boat traffic and the river’s ecosystem.

The Bureau of Research, Development and Hydrology said that the Mekong River’s level was lower than its normal level in numerous provinces, namely Chiang Rai, Loei, Nakhon Pathom, Mukdahan and Ubon Ratchathani.

Importantly, the organisation informed that there was a possibility that the river level would continue decreasing by around 5 to..
