A 72-year-old French retiree committed suicide after falling into a depression following the breakup with his Thai girlfriend. He was found dead with his wrist slashed in his Phuket house.
A neighbour notified police at 19:00 on Saturday evening, Chalong Provincial Police Station confirmed. Deputy investigator Pol Lt Chanad Hongsitichaigun, forensic police and Phuket Ruam Jai rescue workers were dispatched to investigate the scene.
In a two-storey house on Soi Kokyang in Phuket’s Rawai subdistrict, police discovered the body of Robert Simon, a 72-year-old French retiree. “We found him dead with his face up on the bed in the bedroom on the second floor,” Pol Lt Chanad told reporters the following day. “There was a deep cut on his left wrist and blood all over the place.” He had been dead for at least three hours, a medical examiner estimated.
According to Satid Jantabao, the neighbour who had earlier called the police, Mr Simon and his Thai girlfriend split up two weeks ago. “After they broke up, he became very depressed and drank a lot of alcohol,” the housewife told Pol Lt Chanad. “It looked like he was suffering a lot.”
In the room, officers found a blood-stained knife and a farewell letter written in French. In it, Mr Simon described his difficulties coping with the breakup from his ex-girlfriend.
“Based on the evidence we have found so far, it looks like personal problems have driven Mr Simon to kill himself by slashing his wrist,” Pol Lt Chanad assumed. “However,” he added, “even though the case is currently being ruled as a suicide, the investigation is still ongoing in order to confirm the cause of death officially.”
The French Embassy has been notified of Mr Simon’s death. Rescue workers sent his body to Vachira Phuket Hospital where a post-mortem examination will be conducted later this week.
