On 28 January the emergency alert was raised to level 2 of 3, considering an “imminent danger” to Brazil.
On 5 February, the Brazilian government sent two planes to evacuate 34 of the 58 Brazilians in Wuhan. They and the flight were quarantined at a Brazilian Air Force base in Anápolis, Goiás, and discharged, together with the doctors and professionals who had contact with them, on 23 February, four days earlier than predicted as routine tests repeatedly showed negative results for Covid-19.
On 25 February, the Ministry of Health of Brazil reported the first positive case of coronavirus in the country and South America, a 61-year-old man from São Paulo, who travelled to Lombardy, Italy, between 9 and 21 February. He was showing mild symptoms and quarantined at home, the confirmation test was also positive.
On 26 February, after the first confirmed case in the country, the government in Rio reported that Brazil is monitoring 20 suspected cases, 12 of them from people who came from Italy.
