The capital of Indonesia is Jakarta which enjoys a special territory and the status of a province. Being such a place of importance it enjoys maximum security as well as is the economic center of the country. Jakarta has got a lot of history associated with it too. The place was first names “Jayakarta” meaning the “the city of glorious victory”.
Later on the Dutch took hold of the place renaming it “Batavia”. The Japanese got rid of the Dutch during the Second World War and gave it back its former name in a modified form of “Jakarta“. This name still continues to be the one to denote the capital.
Jakarta is a densely populated city full of skyscrapers, buildings, malls and other metropolitan equipments. The best time of the year to be in Jakarta is June when the climate over there is really pleasant. Jakarta has got many hotels that people can afford for a stay during the beginning or end of their trips. The city is not full of discos but still a few good ones can easily be found. Most tourists like the city life of Jakarta but those who hate urban life might not enjoy the stay as much.
The eastern and western parts of the city are to be avoided by the visitor as these parts reveal the extreme poverty of the country – these parts are covered with slums. The people of the city are warm hearted and hospitable which fills the heart of any traveler.
The hub of the city is the Golden Triangle, formed by Jalan Jendral Sudirman next to Jalan Tamrin, Jalan Gatot Subroto and Jalan Rasuna Said but the cab drivers have shortened the name to “sudirman” which is very helpful to the tourists who find it very hard to remember such long names in a foreign tongue.
Far in the northern part, in Kota, one can see the city’s best colonial structure. Then there is the Ancol Amusement Park. This amusement park is particularly a favorite of children who seem to have a great time here in the Sea World. It is at the same time very enjoyable to the adults. This place is very appropriate for spending quality time with family and friends.
At the top of the main north-south street of the city is the National Monument. Around this place cheaper accommodation is easily found. The main hotels and the financial district lie at the very center of the city. A very populated river called Ciliwung divides the financial center.
For all city lovers Jakarta would present a densely populated city. They would enjoy spending time at the various parts and hot-spots of the city and shop around. But those who love to get away from a populated urban center this place would not prove to be so attractive. They need to make their plan avoiding the stay at the capital. This might be just a stop for a day or two during the entire trip but not a longer stay.
